Student Involvement and Leadership - Southern Utah University

Fifty new students are invited to join us in our inaugural SUU Wilderness Adventure. 

 

Making friends to start SUU with and exploring Southern Utah is what SUU’s Wilderness Adventure is all about.  We’re hoping to recruit students of all backgrounds to the program in order to offer a unique and intimate experience.

 

Each Wilderness Adventure trip will have 8-10 new students and be led by 2 upper class leaders providing a great opportunity for developing close friendships to ease the transition to SUU.  You learn a great deal about people by living with them for five days.  In addition, you will learn about SUU from your leaders and have the opportunity to enjoy a memorable Southern Utah adventure.  Imagine walking into Thunderbird Flight School with 50 fellow classmates after having a grand adventure in the wild lands of Southern Utah.  Then imagine starting school knowing 8-10 other students intimately, 40 others who have had a similar experience, and the potential of friends you’ll meet by considering your new friends’ and leaders’ roommates and friends.     

SUU Wilderness Adventures are open to all new students. 

 

You do NOT need previous outdoor experience to participate.  SUU Wilderness Adventures is a perfect way to transition into SUU through the outdoors. 

Please sign up during orientation at the Outdoor Center or call 435-865-8704 to secure your seat.  The cost is $185 and can be paid at the Outdoor Center. 

The Trips this year include:

 

1. Bryce Canyon: backpacking, hiking, and service project (moderately strenuous, hiking up to 8 miles in a day with a backpack)
2. SUU Mountain Ranch: car camping, hiking, climbing, and service project (moderately strenuous, hiking 6-8 miles in a day with a day pack)
3. Grandstaircase Escalante National Monument: canyoneering, backpacking (strenuous, hiking 8-10 miles in a day with a backpack)
4. Snow Canyon: car camping, climbing, hiking (moderately-strenuous to strenuous depending upon the climbs chosen, hiking up to 8 miles in a day, top rope climbing)
5. Tushar Mountains/Beaver High Adventure Base: high ropes course, backpacking, peak summiting (strenuous, hiking 10-12 miles a day with and without a backpack)
